Roger Capron, born September 4, 1922 in Vincennes, France, is an internationally renowned ceramicist, designer and sculptor, recognized for his works that combine the elegance of forms with a bold modernist approach. He is particularly famous for his ceramic creations that marked the post-war period and influenced the design and decoration of that time.
After studying at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, Roger Capron decided to devote himself to ceramics. In 1946, he moved to Vallauris, a village on the Côte d’Azur renowned for its pottery crafts, and created the Atelier Callis workshop with a few fellow ceramists. His style developed quickly, influenced by the artistic effervescence of the time and the presence of famous artists in the region, including Pablo Picasso, who also settled in Vallauris. Capron perfected his ceramic techniques there, particularly in the creation of decorative objects and tiles.
In the 1950s, he founded his own factory, where he mass-produced ceramic furniture and decorative objects, while continuing to produce his unique pieces. His aesthetic is characterized by geometric patterns and vibrant colors, in keeping with the modern design trends of the time. His ceramic tiles, used for tables, floors and wall surfaces, became highly sought-after and symbolized the chic Mediterranean lifestyle of the time. Thanks to his success, Capron collaborated with renowned architects and interior designers, and his creations were exported all over the world.
Throughout his career, Capron received numerous awards, including the prestigious Grand Prix International de la Céramique in 1970.
